450,000 refugees have entered Moldova and approximately 100,000 have stayed in the country. Statistics show that currently 1 out of 8 children now in Moldova are Ukrainian.
At La VIA Community Center we have developed a day program for refugee families where they can spend several hours each morning (full day on Saturdays) with access to games, shower facilities, washing machine, computers, logistical support and a free hot meal. They also find comfort in the welcome and compassion we seek to offer. One father of three commented, “I first came for my children, but after spending the day here, I feel better too. We will be back tomorrow.”
Where have the funds gone so far?
- gas money for driving to the Ukrainian border and back
- cash gifts for families passing through or resettling in Moldova
- pillows and bedding, clothing
- food for the day program at La VIA Community Center
- new staff hire of a Refugee Program Coordinator
